Shared decision making (SDM) is critical for arriving at optimal decisions for children. The current state of SDM includes gaps in a number of areas including the very definition of SDM. Suboptimal or absent SDM can lead to ethical dilemmas as well as a moral distress. This presentation will define SDM, will clearly outline who should be involved and how, and will present a schematic for optimal SDM. To further clarify optimal SDM, cases will be utilized to demonstrate common pitfalls of SDM. The focus will be on children at medical crossroads, children for whom potential life-and-death decisions need to be made.
