2019 Radioactive I-125 Seed Localization of Non-Palpable Lesions at AdventHealth RAM License 2897-1

Radioactive seed localization has improved our rates of negative margins of excision. First, the entry site of the wire is often not at the ideal location for incision by the surgeon at the time of operation. This may lead to additional unnecessary dissection and suboptimal cosmetic results. In addition, the wire must be placed the day of operation, necessitating the coordination of radiology and operative schedules and eliminating the possibility of performing a wire-localized procedure as the first operation of the morning. The most important disadvantage, however, is the inaccuracy of localizing the target lesion transcutaneously and during dissection. The surgeon must estimate the ideal route to the lesion and the amount of tissue to be excised. This results in high rates of re-operations for tissue margins involved by carcinoma.
