This lecture addresses patients in sickle cell pain crisis which can be one of the most frustrating conditions for emergency medicine physicians and hospitalists to treat.  Dr. Gomez reviews a protocol and management strategy that has the potential to improve both patient and physician satisfaction, with an emphasis on compassionate, efficient pain control that promotes successful discharge.



Objectives
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss actual rates of substance use disorder in the sickle cell population.
  2. Differentiate addiction behaviors from pseudoaddiction behaviors.
  3. Identify different pain management strategies, including use of PCA, for acute management of a sickle cell pain crisis.
  4. Discuss strategies to prevent readmission for sickle cell pain crisis.
