At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology and malignancy risk of thyroid nodules in children, including how risk differs from adults and varies by age.
  2. Identify ultrasound features most strongly associated with malignancy in pediatric thyroid nodules, with particular emphasis on microcalcifications, hypo echogenicity, and the presence of multiple suspicious criteria.
  3. Explain the role and limitations of thyroid cytology (Bethesda System) in children, including the risk of malignancy despite benign or indeterminate biopsy results.
  4. Integrate clinical factors, ultrasound findings, and cytology results to guide surgical decision-making, including when thyroidectomy should be considered despite non-malignant cytology
  5. Critically evaluate how recent evidence informs current pediatric thyroid nodule guidelines and apply these findings to multidisciplinary clinical practice
