Biosketch – Christopher E. Forsmark, M.D.

Dr. Chris E. Forsmark is a Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and University Term Professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville. After earning his Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins University, he completed his Internal Medicine Residency, Gastroenterology Fellowship, and Research Fellowship at the University of California – San Francisco. Upon completion of his training, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Florida to work with his mentor, Dr. Philip P. Toskes, a world-renowned pancreatologist. Dr. Forsmark is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology. His clinical and research interests are in the areas of acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic function and function testing, biliary and pancreatic malignancy, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He is the author of 24 book chapters, 75 reviews and editorials, and 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts of original research in these areas of focus. He has served in many leadership positions in our most important scientific societies. Dr. Forsmark is the former Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology Board, former President of the American Pancreatic Association, former Chair of the Pancreatic Disorders Section of the American Gastroenterologic Association, and former President of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society. He is currently Chairman of the AGA Institute’s Education and Training Committee and Chair of the National Pancreas Foundation Board of Directors. He has been an invited speaker and session moderator on acute and chronic pancreatitis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, and other topics at national and international scientific venues over 154 times.

Dr. Forsmark has focused his professional career on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the pancreas, advanced therapeutic endoscopy, and the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows. In his clinical practice, he sees patients from across the Southeastern Region of the United States, as well as from other countries, who are seeking leading-edge treatment of their pancreatic disease. His clinical research interest is focused on acute and chronic pancreatitis, specifically on early and accurate diagnosis, epidemiology, medical and endoscopic treatment, and prevention and management of complications including cancer, diabetes, and malnutrition. He is the recipient of multiple Excellence in Teaching awards and Exemplary Teacher awards from the University of Florida.

Dr. Forsmark currently serves as co-chair of The Consortium for the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes, and Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Centers, a UO1 grant that is jointly funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Cancer Institute, with very strong external support from the National Pancreas Foundation and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. He is co-chair of the Type 1 Diabetes in Acute Pancreatitis Consortium - Clinical Centers, another UO1 grant which is funded by the National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
